LOWER THE RETIREMENT AGE TO CREATE JOBS.
Over the past two decades, the Kenyan government has been struggling with the issue of joblessness to the point where it has become part of the manifesto for the presidential candidates.
Kenya's unemployment rate was 5.6 per cent in 2023. This represents a steady decline from the increase after the financial crisis.
This is due to many students graduating from tertiary institutions, a number bigger than the demand in the job market.
This is terrifying to the extent that the "Omnipotent god of Khoisan" has to ''lie'' that the government has created more than eight hundred thousand jobs in the last year.
This is so shocking especially when most companies have laid off many staff due to taxation imposed by the "msafiri -led" government.
I understand that the Salaries and Remuneration Commission has received a proposal to lower the retirement age from 60 to 55 years though they are reluctant on implementation.
Let us lower the age to 50 years with full pension benefits which will be made into law.
This means that a lot of people will be employed straight from institutions hence reducing the number of years spent on the lookout for jobs.
A the same time, lowering the retirement age forces the nation to incur a higher pensionable liability as more Kenyans will now be pensionable, but on the lighter side, we will be reducing the unemployment rate.
The medical and education sector has a lot of old public servants who were employed in the late 80's and early 90's. We need to replace this population with a savvy generation.
By 2022, the number of unemployed Kenyans stood at 19.1 million. This was an increase of over eight hundred thousand compared to the previous year.
The cohort with the highest level of unemployment was among the age group between 20 to 24 years old, with an unemployment rate of over 15 per cent.
When we implement this, people will be employed and retire early. This will help the retirees enjoy their life in peace or manage their business as the fresh graduates get employed within a year upon completion of their respective courses.
