POLICE OFFICERS ARE THE MAIN ''CAUSE'' OF ROAD ACCIDENTS.
The number of road accidents experienced in Kenya this year has been quite alarming.
From January to April 2024 alone, over 7,000 people have been involved in road accidents, which is an increase compared to last year within the same period.
Whether it is motorcycles or vehicles, we've lost lives and if something is not done about it, the trend will continue.
We have always been blaming drivers each time an accident occurs and to some extent, we are unfair to them.
The people who are in charge of ensuring that we travel safely by following traffic rules are the police officers.
They are the main causes of road accidents. When you call to report the misconduct of the driver and the manambas, they will take fifty bob and let you "travel with God".
They have made the conductors feel so powerful.
I remember once complaining of overloading.
The manamba told me " ukitaka kukaa pekee yako, nunua gari, hii ni biashara'
Another day I tried complaining about over-speeding, the manamba told me" Bro shuka utembee, gari lazima iende speed"
Most of the PSVs that we have on the road do not meet the safety measures outlined by the NTSA.
Most of them don't have seat belts or speed governors.
When they reach the checkpoints, instead of the police checking if everything is ok, they only ask "Chai"
Instead of the government punishing the rogue officers, all they are concerned about is making uniforms with no pockets.
Another thing is that the matatu SACCOS have played a bigger role in corruption at the traffic department.
They pay a "monthly subscription" which enables them to overload and overspeed without fear of being arrested.
The same police department has also allowed people with fake driving licenses to operate after receiving "kitu kidogo".
How can you learn to drive within three days, get a driver's license and operate?
It's because they have failed to regulate the emergence of driving schools that only have one vehicle with over a hundred learners, all graduating within one month.
