JOURNALISM IS DEAD

Journalism is dead. We no longer produce classy journalists. If you are a parent, don't encourage your kid to take journalism as a career course unless you have a "big thigh" in the industry.
Gone are the years when we used to sit down and watch the news with interest.
Gone are the days when news anchors were the celebrities in town.

The media industry no longer produces excellent practitioners compared to the early 2000's.
We used to the likes of Nimrod Taabu, Raphael Tuju, Catherine Kasavuli, Tom Mboya and Beatrice Marshall.
                                         The Late Catherine Kasavuli

Nowadays, even TikTokers do better content than radio hence the surge of many Tik Tokers in media industry.

Schools should not be blamed for this.
It's the industry's obsession with numbers that led to the downfall of the once prestigious profession.

Who said that we all like comedians speaking on our radios and TVs?
Each show has a comedian in it.
It's the integration of these personalities that has led to the issue of joblessness and lack of authenticity in this field.

Why should I watch comedy skits on YouTube and later listen to the same actor on radio and TV?
Radios are now turning into comedy shows.

It has become boring.
Even the conversations in the industry have shifted from informing and educating to purely entertaining through the use of dirty language and slang.

The government has also played a big role in this.
Once the government stops funding the media industry or reduces the amount of money spent on advertising, the stations will always look for an alternative which is to promote content that promotes gambling, alcoholism and sexual immorality.
After Every thirty minutes, there is an advert on either AirBnb, SportPesa or Johnnie Walker .

They have even moved further into events. Media stations are now more involved in organizing events than dissemination of information. .

The only way to discourage this is by increasing funding for media stations or expanding the government advertising budget.

At the same time, a teacher will never work as a doctor, and that is what ails the media industry. People who are great storytellers are now being employed to work in radio, they have no idea about media laws and ethics.

The government should ensure that each degree is applied in the appropriate field, or else we won't be able to get the next Larry Madowo, Ayub Abdikadir,Hussein Mohammed and Edward Kwach.
Since the emergence of citizen journalism, the mainstream media has been struggling. Their content lacks novelty.
